Close the gap under the array before something moves in.

The space between the modules and the roof is sheltered, warm, and hidden from predators — which is why pigeons and roof rats find it so quickly. Guard mesh closes the perimeter, but only after the space has been cleared and sanitized.

The damage

What nesting actually costs.

It rarely stays a nuisance. Nesting debris blocks drainage and traps moisture against the roofing. Droppings are acidic and accumulate on flashing and fasteners. Rodents chew wire insulation and MC4 connectors, which turns a pest problem into an electrical fault — and an arc risk on a DC circuit that is energized every daylight hour.

  • Blocked drainage paths and trapped moisture against the roof deck
  • Corrosive droppings on flashing, rails, and grounding hardware
  • Chewed conductor insulation and damaged module connectors
  • Shading and soiling from accumulated nesting material
  • Noise, odor, and mite activity carrying into the attic
Installation

Order of operations matters.

Mesh installed over an active nest seals the problem in rather than out. The sequence is not optional:

  • Assess activity and confirm the space is unoccupied before closing anything
  • Remove nesting material, debris, and droppings from under the array
  • Sanitize the affected roof area and clear drainage paths
  • Fasten galvanized or coated mesh to the module frames with purpose-made clips
  • No drilling into module frames and no penetrations into the roofing
  • Clean the modules and document the finished perimeter with photos

Active nesting during a protected nesting period may require the work to be timed accordingly — we will tell you if that applies to your roof.

Questions

Guard questions.

Will the mesh damage my modules or roof?

No. Clips fasten to the module frame itself — no drilling into frames, no new penetrations in the roofing, and nothing that interferes with the array's grounding path.

Does it affect airflow or performance?

Perimeter mesh leaves the ventilation gap under the modules intact. What it removes is the entry point, not the airflow.

They are already up there. Now what?

Clearing and sanitizing come first, then the perimeter is closed. Closing an occupied space is both inhumane and ineffective — the damage continues where you cannot see it.

How long does the guard last?

Coated mesh installed properly holds up for years in this climate. We re-check the perimeter at every subsequent cleaning or inspection visit, which is one of the reasons memberships pair well with guard installations.
